VPN Overview
Definition
VPN is a network tunneling program that encrypts data / traffic over the Internet.
UofM's VPN tunnels your data through UofM's servers to protect your sensitive work related data, and allows access to specific UofM services.
Purpose
UofM's VPN generally is used to access various services such as our Schools U:/ and S:/ Network Drives.
Do I need to use it?
Generally speaking, if you can access your UofM service without VPN then you should be safe to continue doing so. If you cannot access a service or you are in a location that you would feel more comfortable if your data is secured through UofM then you can use the VPN.
Keep in mind if you use the "all traffic" connection, all of your data will pass through UofM first (this could slow down websites, or cause problems with streaming services), so be sure not to leave it on.
VPN Client Name
The current name of UofM's VPN client is Cisco Secure Client. You can search in your application list for the program then follow the directions below to launch it.
I can access network drives / services without VPN
On UMSN computers the Cisco Secure Client runs a background service that checks what type of Internet traffic you are using, then tunnels it through UofM automatically. So there is a good chance you won't even need to use the VPN.
