UMSN Linux Server Access Quick Start Guide

       UMSN Linux Server Access Quick Start Guide:

  1. Connect to the University of Michigan Campus VPN

           For information and installation instructions, please visit U-M Virtual Private Network (VPN)

  1. Access to the UMSN Linux server using SSH:
    1. Download PuTTY SSH client (See SCREENSHOT below b.)
    2. To Access Your Server using the Putty SSH Client. Login to the server via Putty using the server information you received.
    3. Open Putty and enter your received Hostname or IP Address in the Hostname or IP Address field. The default port will be 22. Click on the Open button to open the command line window. (See SCREENSHOT below e.)
    4. In the command line window, type in your uniqname at the login as prompt and press enter on your keyboard. (See SCREENSHOT below g.)
    5. In the command line window, type in your UMICH password at the login as: prompt and press enter on your keyboard. (See SCREENSHOT below i.)
    6. After entering your UMICH password, A two-factor authorization request will be pushed to your default device. (See SCREENSHOT below k.)
    7. You should now be logged into the UMSN server using SSH access. (See SCREENSHOT below m.)
  2. Access to the UMSN Linux server using SFTP
    1. Download and install Cyberduck (see Getting Started with Cyberduck: Downloading, Installing, and Running)
    2. Login to the server with Cyberduck using the server information you received.
    3. To SFTP into the UMSN server, click Open Connection. (See SCREENSHOT below d.)
    4. Select SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) from the drop-down list at the top of the pop-up window. In the Server area, enter your server’s IP Address you received. The default port will be 22. The Username is your uniqnames, and the Password is your UMICH password, and click Connect. (See SCREENSHOT below f.)
    5. After clicking Connect, it will have one pop-up window showing below. Since this is your first time connecting to the server, check the box next to Always and click Allow in the Unknown Fingerprint popup. (See SCREENSHOT below h.)

    6. After clicking Allow, A two-factor authorization request will be pushed to your default device. (See SCREENSHOT below j.)

    7. After selecting the option number and continue: you will receive another popup window and Login. (See SCREENSHOT below l.)

    8. You can install apps and add other files to your server easily. (See SCREENSHOT below n.)
