New Student Receives 'Access Denied' Error Trying to Access Gmail

Body

Environment

U-M Google (Gmail)

Issue

I am a new student who is receiving the error "Access Denied" when trying to log into my U-M Email (Gmail).

Resolution

  1. Open an Incognito Window or Private Window
  2. Navigate to email.umich.edu
  3. Type your uniqname and password
    • Do not log in using your friend account
    • Do not allow your browser to auto-fill your friend account credentials
  4. If you are not able to log in still, please contact the ITS Service Center
  5. If you could log in using an Incognito Window or Private window, do the following:
    1. Go back to your normal browsing window and visit Wolverine Access to log out of your friend account (if you are logged in using the friend account) and then try to log into your U-M Email again. If you still cannot log in (or this does not apply to your situation), proceed to the next step
    2. If you have a personal Gmail account, try adding the U-M account by going to Gmail, clicking the user medallion, clicking "Add another account," typing in your U-M email address [uniqname]@umich.edu, and then finally typing your uniqname and password on the web login screen. If you still cannot log in (or this does not apply to your situation), proceed to the next step
    3. Clearing cookies and cache for all time should fix the problem if neither of the above steps worked
