Slack Display Name Changed to Uniqname

Summary

This article explains why a user's display name (i.e., @name) changed from their full name to their uniqname.

Issue

My Slack display name recently changed to my uniqname (from my full name). Why did this happen?

Resolution

  • To minimize confusion between individuals with the same name at our large institution, U-M Slack display names are standardized to a person's uniqname
  • The most common reason a person's display name ends up set as something other than their uniqname is that a legacy workspace was migrated into U-M Slack
    • In these cases, ITS retroactively updates the display name to match the individual's uniqname
  • Therefore, if your display name recently changed to your uniqname, this was a result of an ITS batch update
  • You do not have the option to choose a different display name in Slack as it must be your uniqname
