How do I reset the password to my U-M Google Shared Account?

Resolution

To reset the password for a U-M Google Shared Account, you must be an account owner and have an eligible university role (i.e., faculty or regular staff).

Note: If your Shared Account has a non-standard uniqname with less than nine characters (e.g., janedoe), you must contact the ITS Service Center for assistance with a manual password reset. You will not be able to use the self-service tool described below to reset the password for this account.

If you are an account owner:

  1. Go to the ITS Shared Account Manager tool.
    • Important: Shared Accounts not imported into the ITS Shared Account Manager tool must do so before resetting the password. Refer to Google: Renew a Shared Account for instructions.
  2. Find your Shared Account in the list under "Google Shared Accounts You Own" and click Edit. (If you do not find it, you are not an owner, or it hasn't been imported yet.)
  3. Click Reset password.
  4. Verify the current account owners are correct. (If not, click Update Owners and change them before continuing.)
  5. Check the box to confirm you understand the information provided and click Reset Shared Account Password.
  6. You will be shown the password ONCE on the page after clicking the button. You should copy and save it in a secure location immediately before leaving the page.

As a reminder:

  • Resetting the Shared Account's password will reset it for all account owners.
  • It is your responsibility to save and share the new password with the other owners securely.
  • If you navigate away from the page without saving the password, you must reset it again, as it is not stored or sent via email.
  • ITS cannot recover a password change that you did not save elsewhere and will inform you to reset the password again.
  • You cannot request a custom password for the account.
  • You cannot use an SSH client to reset the password yourself.

Additional Information

If you receive an error while attempting to reset the password, please copy the error message and open a ticket with the ITS Service Center.
