How to reset your PIN if you aren't signed in

If you forgot your PIN and need to reset it, you can do so from the Windows sign-in screen. Look below the PIN text box:

  • If the option I forgot my PIN is available, select it and follow the instructions to reset your PIN. If there are multiple accounts on the device, choose the one you need to reset. This option is only available for Microsoft accounts, not for local accounts
  • If the option I forgot my PIN is not available, you must sign in with your password and then reset the PIN from the Settings app. Select Sign-in options and then select Enter your password.

Additional Information

If you have configured Windows Hello, but then decide that you don't want it anymore, you can follow the instructions in Prevent Windows Hello Use on MiWorkspace Computer.

If you use Windows Hello confirmations with the Okta Verify desktop app, you may have trouble authenticating with Okta to reset your pin (because your pin may be required to authenticate with Okta). In these cases, try the following work around:

  1. Before initiating the PIN reset, quit the Okta Verify desktop app
    1. Windows: Click the up arrow in the System Tray at the bottom-right of the taskbar, right-click the "Okta Verify" app, and select "Quit".
    2. MacOS: Click the Okta Verify icon in the menu bar at the top of the screen, right-click it, and select "Quit". If the Okta Verify icon is not visible, close other menu bar applications to reveal it.
  2. Initiate the PIN reset, and choose one of the Okta Verify mobile options (Push or Passcode)
    1. If you do not have Okta Verify set up on a mobile device, contact the ITS Service Center
