Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech recognition software for Windows
Issue
What are some ways I can use Dragon to substitute for mouse functions?
Resolution
Selecting and activating links or buttons
- In some cases, you will be able to speak the name of a link or button and it will activate. W
- If this does not work, the most effective method of positioning the cursor is usually a NaturallySpeaking feature called MouseGrid.
- If you have not previously used it, here is an introduction to MouseGrid use.
- Once you have positioned your cursor, say “MouseClick” and the link or button should activate.
- Please use the Disability Equity Office (DEO) Barriers report form to let us know of any situations where MouseGrid does not work.
- Another strategy is to say “Press Tab” to move forward through clickable items, or “Press Shift Tab” to move backward.
- However, this can take several repetitions of the command until you navigate to what you want to activate, and the navigation order is not always predictable.
Selecting items from menus and other pull-down lists
- Where provided, keyboard shortcuts can be used. Say "Press" plus the shortcut; e.g., "Press control P" usually works to open a Print dialogue.
- If an application has keyboard shortcuts, you can often find them by looking at the menu, looking at help documentation, or doing a Google search on "<application> keyboard shortcuts."
- Activating pull-down lists with MouseGrid usually requires two steps: one to open the list and one to navigate to the desired option.
- In some cases, activating MouseGrid a second time causes the list to disappear, making the function inaccessible.
- Please use the Disability Equity Office (DEO) Barriers report form to let us know of any situations where a pull-down list doesn't work with Dragon.
- Once the desired item has been selected, "Press Enter" will usually activate it.
