U-M Google, U-M Okta Sign In
Issue
When signing in to my U-M Google Shared Account, Okta prompts me to authenticate. Shared Accounts don't need to use multi-factor authentication when logging in. Why is this happening, and how do I resolve this so I can access the account?
Resolution
Although you are signing in to your U-M Google Shared Account in an incognito or private window, you may encounter different Okta experiences/issues when logging in than you did with Duo/U-M Weblogin. These issues appear to occur when you have the Okta Verify app installed on your computer (especially if you're using it with Okta FastPass).
Important: You do not need to use multi-factor authentication to access your Shared Account. Even if Okta prompts authentication, follow the appropriate resolution below.
You will find the experience/issue and the recommended action to take for each below.
- Okta may prompt you to "Verify it's you with a security method" and display your individual uniqname as the account you're logging in to instead of your Shared Account.
- Click Back to sign in under the list of authentication methods and enter your Shared Account's email address and password (when prompted).
- Okta FastPass may automatically open and prompt you to verify with a passcode or biometric (fingerprint, face). (This tends to happen on Windows computers.)
- Click Cancel in the Windows Security/Hello pop-up and close the Okta Verify app. After returning to your browser window, click Back to sign in under the list of authentication methods and enter your Shared Account's email address and password (when prompted).
- Your incognito/private browser may prompt you to give "okta.umich.edu" access to other apps and services on your device.
- You can ignore this prompt and continue signing in with your Shared Account's email address and password when prompted.
