Issue
How can I use Adobe Acrobat to convert a PDF file to a different file format?
Resolution
Note: Access to the Adobe Acrobat conversion tools require signing in with an
eligible U-M Adobe account.
Adobe Acrobat can be used to convert a PDF file into the following file formats:
- Microsoft Word (docx & doc)
- Microsoft PowerPoint (pptx)
- Microsoft Excel (xlsx & xml)
- Image (jpeg, jpeg 2000, tiff, & png)
- Text (txt & rtf)
- PostScript (ps & eps)
- Web (html)
Adobe Acrobat Desktop App
- Open the PDF file you wish to covert using the Adobe Acrobat app
- Select Convert from the toolbar at the top of the Adobe Acrobat window
- Select the file format you wish to convert to under the Export PDF To section.
- Alternative file formats can be selected by clicking on the format listed (e.g., DOCX, XLSX, JPEG, RTF)
- Click the Convert to button.
- Choose a file name and location for the converted file.
- Click the Save button.
Once the file has been converted & saved, the newly converted file will automatically open within its native application (e.g., Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc)
Adobe Acrobat Web App
- Go to https://acrobat.adobe.com/
- Click Sign in in the top-right corner of the page.
- Sign in using uniqname@umich.edu email address and select Company or School Account if prompted.
- Sign in via Weblogin and authenticate to Two-Factor DUO.
- Select Convert from the toolbar at the top of the page.
- Select the conversion tool for the file format you wish to convert the PDF file to.
- Upload the PDF file
- This can be done by dragging & dropping the file onto the webpage or by selecting "Add a file from your device" to browse your device's file system.
- Select an alternative file format if desired using the Convert to: drop-down.
- Click the Convert to button.
Once the file finishes converting, it will automatically save to Adobe cloud storage. The newly converted file will automatically open within an Adobe preview window within the web browser if it's a supported file type for previewing; otherwise, it will bring you to a page where the file can be downloaded to your device. If the newly created file opens within an Adobe preview page, then it can be downloaded using the ellipses (...) icon in the top-right side of the page.
