Issue
How do I access my U-M Google Mail (Gmail) on a mobile phone or tablet?
Resolution
ITS recommends using only a web browser or applications/clients created and supported by Google to connect to U-M Google accounts (including Google Mail). Using third-party applications or clients (created by a group or company other than Google, such as Apple Mail or Microsoft Outlook) can lead to unexpected results,
including the risk of data loss.
ITS does not provide configuration assistance or additional support for using third-party apps/clients with U-M Google accounts, except for
Mozilla Thunderbird, and recommends it only to assist with accessibility issues.
To access your U-M Google Mail on a mobile phone or tablet:
- Install and open the official Gmail app from the appropriate app store for your device:
- Depending on whether you've signed in with another account in the app, follow the applicable instructions:
- If you have not signed in to an account in the app:
- Tap Sign in.
- Tap Add account.
- If you have already signed in to a non-UM account in the app:
- Tap your profile picture in the top right corner of the app.
- Tap Add another account.
- Tap Google.
- Depending on your mobile device and its settings, you may need to tap Continue when prompted and/or enter your device's passcode before you can proceed.
- Enter your @umich.edu email address on the sign-in page and tap Next.
- Log in to U-M Sign In with your uniqname and UMICH password. Complete multi-factor authentication if prompted.
Your U-M Google Mail account should now be logged in via the app.
Additional Information
You should not add your U-M Google account as a "user account" directly in your phone's settings.
