MiVideo: Human Generated Captions and Audio Descriptions For SSD Accommodation

How to order free professional human-generated captions or audio descriptions for a disability accommodation.

Resolution

If you have an accommodation for your course the SSD office will provide further instruction on how to order these services for free. For questions contact ssdrequest@umich.edu.

Professional Human-Generated Captions (English)

Unedited auto machine captions are not ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant. Professional human-generated English captions can be ordered on request for disability accommodations through the SSD office. 

• The video must be added to MiVideo.
• The source video must be in English.
• Professional captions can be ordered for videos that already have machine captions. Once professional captions are created they will become the default and the machines captions will be disabled on the video.
• Captioning requests produce English caption and transcript files.
• The recording length can be edited down as necessary, see the Utilizing Video Editor article.

Order Human-Generated Captions

Media owners and co-editors can order captions for media.

1. Login to the MiVideo Mediaspace at https://mivideo.it.umich.edu once to get added to the Professional Captioning Order Profile.
2. Account > My Media > check the box next to the media item. 
3. Select Actions > Request Captions.
4. Choose the SSD service.
5. Select the appropriate Turnaround Time based on how quickly you need the captions returned.
6. Leave the defaults in the other fields.
7. Click Submit.

Professional Human-generated Captions for a Musical Performance (English)

Professional human-generated captions for a a musical performance can be ordered on request for disability accommodations through the SSD office. 

• The video must be added to MiVideo.
• The source video must be in English.
• Professional captions can be ordered for videos that already have machine captions. Once professional captions are created they will become the default and the machines captions will be disabled on the video.
• Captioning requests produce English caption and transcript files.
• The recording length can be edited down as necessary, see the Utilizing Video Editor article.

Order Human-Generated Captions

Media owners and co-editors can order captions for media.

1. Login to the MiVideo Mediaspace at https://mivideo.it.umich.edu once to get added to the Professional Music Captioning Order Profile.
2. Account > My Media > check the box next to the media item. 
3. Select Actions > Request Captions.
4. Choose the SSD Music Performances Only service.
5. Leave the defaults.
6. Click Submit.

Professional Human-Generated Audio Description (English)

Professional human-generated audio descriptions can be ordered on request for disability accommodations through the SSD office. 

• Audio description (AD) is an audio track describing visual information in the video. It is designed to fit within audio silences or pauses in the original video.
• To learn more about AD, see the Order Audio Descriptions article.
• The video must be added to MiVideo.
• The source video must be in English.
• AD requests produce a separate audio track.
• Make any necessary edits to the video before ordering AD. The audio file is uneditable.
• The recording length can be edited down as necessary, see the Utilizing Video Editor article.

Order Human-Generated Audio Description

Media owners and co-editors can order captions for media.

1. Login to the MiVideo Mediaspace at https://mivideo.it.umich.edu once to get added to the Professional AD/EAD Order Profile.
2. Account > My Media > check the box next to the media item. 
3. Select Actions > Request Captions.
4. Choose the SSD Audio/Extended Audio Description service.
5. Select the Audio Description feature.
6. Select the appropriate Turnaround Time based on how quickly you need the description returned.
7. Leave the defaults in the other fields.
8. Click Submit.

Professional Human-Generated Extended Audio Description (English)

Professional human-generated extended audio descriptions can be ordered on request for disability accommodations through the SSD office. 

• Extended Audio Description (EAD) is a description track delivered by automatically pausing and restarting the video playback.
• To learn more about EAD, see the Order Extended Audio Descriptions article.
• The video must be added to MiVideo.
• The source video must be in English.
• EAD requests produce a timestamped VTT file.
• EAD for YouTube passthrough videos on MiVideo is not supported.
• Make any necessary edits to the video before ordering EAD. 
• The recording length can be edited down as necessary, see the Utilizing Video Editor article.

Order Human-Generated Extended Audio Description

Media owners and co-editors can order captions for media.

1. Login to the MiVideo Mediaspace at https://mivideo.it.umich.edu once to get added to the Professional AD/EAD Order Profile.
2. Account > My Media > check the box next to the media item. 
3. Select Actions > Request Captions.
4. Choose the SSD Audio/Extended Audio Description service.
5. Select the Extended Audio Description feature.
6. Select the appropriate Turnaround Time based on how quickly you need the description returned.
7. Leave the defaults in the other fields.
8. Click Submit.
