Issue

How can I import a OneNote notebook to my U-M Microsoft 365 account?

Resolution

Warning: The use of OneNote has been known to cause significant problems when you leave the university (i.e., issues with the data extraction of notes). To avoid potential data loss, ITS recommends using Google Docs instead.
  • The OneNote import option is only available in the OneNote for Office 365, OneNote 2016, and OneNote 2013 applications.
    • This cannot be done using OneNote for Windows 10, OneNote for Mac, or OneNote for the Web.
  • Additionally, the OneNote for Office 365, OneNote 2016, and OneNote 2013 applications are not available on Mac or Linux computers.
    • If you cannot access a Windows computer, then it will be best to use Virtual Sites as a workaround. More information on Virtual Sites can be found at Getting Started with Virtual Sites.
  • Before uploading a OneNote Notebook to your U-M account, you must first export the OneNote notebook as a OneNote Package (.onepkg) file.

To import your OneNote notebook:

  1. Open OneNote for Office 365, OneNote 2016, or OneNote 2013.
  2. Click the File tab at the top.
  3. Click Open from the left sidebar.
  4. Find the OneNote Package (.onepkg) file your want to import and open it.
  5. Enter a name for the notebook if desired, and click the Create button. (Leave the Path field set to the default.)
  6. Click the File tab at the top again after the notebook opens.
  7. Click Settings to the left of the notebook that was just opened under "Notebook Information."
  8. Select Share or Move from the drop-down menu.
  9. Select OneDrive - Umich.
  10. Select Browse.
  11. Enter a name for the notebook and click the Move button.

Additional Information

If you do not have OneNote for Office 365, OneNote 2016, or OneNote 2013 installed, you can install it as part of the Microsoft Office 365 productivity apps. More information on how to install the Office 365 apps can be found at Installing Office 365 Applications on Your Device.
