University of Michigan all campuses: cloud software

Issue

How can University of Michigan faculty, staff, and students access Overleaf Professional features at no cost to them?

Resolution

The University of Michigan has subscribed to Overleaf Commons - a subscription service for institutions to provide Overleaf Professional accounts to students, faculty, and staff. For more information, and to create or link an Overleaf Professional account, visit our University of Michigan Overleaf portal. Users will be able to log in using your UMICH credentials either from the portal page or from the main login page (choose the Log in with SSO option which will take you to a screen where you type your email address and then to the UMICH web login page).

Note: Existing users with an @umich.edu login will see a notification on their Overleaf project dashboard encouraging them to log in through SSO. Doing so will unlock Overleaf Professional features.

Existing users who have not added their @umich.edu email to their Overleaf account can add their @umich.edu email to their Overleaf account in Account Settings. When you add your @umich.edu email, you will be prompted to log in via SSO to confirm their affiliation.

Additional Information

Not every Overleaf user will need a professional account. There are several features added with a professional account (see full list here) with two key differences to consider:

  • Compile time limits are raised to 4 minutes from 1 minute. If you are working on a larger or more complex project, the additional compile time may be needed to avoid the timeout limitation.
  • An unlimited number of collaborators* can be invited to a project. With a free account, a user can invite only 1 collaborator.

* Note that collaborators can be on any plan, including the free plan. If you are on a professional plan, some professional features such as the full document history and extended compile time will be available to your collaborators in projects that you have created, even if those collaborators are on the free plan.
