Sharing Screen Mirroring and AirPrint Access to Personal Devices

Issue

How can I provide my roommate or colleague access to mirror their screen to my Smart TV and/or print to my printer via AirPrint? 

Resolution

Supported devices can be registered and connected to the MSetup WiFi network, then subsequently shared with specific people to provide them access to share (i.e., cast or mirror) their phone, tablet, or computer screen to a smart TV/streaming device; or to print to an AirPrint compatible printer. 

Supported Smart TV/Streaming Devices

  • Apple TV
  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Roku
  • Google Chromecast

Supported Printing Devices

  • Any AirPrint capable printer can be registered, connected, and shared. More information on AirPrint and a list of AirPrint capable printers is available on the About AirPrint Apple support page.

How Do I Register & Connect My Device? 

  1. In a web browser, go to the U-M WiFi Configuration and Registration (msetup.its.umich.edu) website.
  2. Choose "Other Device".
  3. Sign in using your uniqname & password.
  4. Select "Create new device".
  5. Provide a name for the device in the "Device Name" field.
  6. Enter the Wireless MAC address for the device in the "MAC Address" field.
    • Refer to the user guide or other support documentation for the device to find this.
  7. Select the "Enable Screen Mirroring/Airprint" checkbox.
  8. Enter the uniqnames of the individuals you'd like to provide screen mirroring or AirPrint access to in the "Shared With:" field.
    • Note: you do not need to add yourself in the "Shared With:" field. Your account will have access by default when registering the device.
  9.  Click the "Create Device" button.
  10. ​​​​Connect the registered device to the MSetup WiFi network.

The device will now be shown as an available device to connect to for the person who registered it and those who it's shared with while they're using a computer, phone, or tablet connected to the MWireless or eduroam network. 

Limitations

  • The computer, phone, or tablet being used to connect to the smart TV/streaming device or printer must be connected to the MWireless or eduroam WiFi network.
  • The smart TV/streaming device or Printer must be connected to MSetup WiFi network.
  • The smart TV/streaming device must have screen mirroring enabled. (Refer to user guide or support documentation for the device as needed)
  • The printer must have AirPrint enabled and/or configured. (Refer to user guide or support documentation for the device as needed)

  • Smart TV, Streaming Device, or Printer's Wireless MAC address.
  • Uniqnames of the individuals the device is shared with.
  • General time/day of connection attempt
  • Physical location (building and room number).
  • Any errors or activity experienced during the attempt
