Journal Entry: Using the Excel JE Upload Template to Create a .dat File.

Environment

FINPROD

Issue

Using the Journal Entry Upload Excel template to generate a .dat file with one or more journals.

Resolution

The Journal Entry Upload Template can be downloaded from the UM Finance website: https://finance.umich.edu/finops/accounting/journals

  • Enable macros in the Excel sheet
    • Otherwise, you will not be able to see or use the Journal Upload excel add-in.
  • Multiple journals can be submitted through one data (.dat) file.
    • A new journal will be created for each valid Header ('H') row with subsequent valid Line ('L') rows beneath it.
    • As you fill in the journal upload template, do not skip any rows between the last line of the previous journal and the header row for the next. A blank line tells the program to stop writing the file information to the data file.
  • After entering the data in the excel spreadsheet, navigate to add-ins > Journal Uploads > Export to create the .dat file.
