Google: Download Site as HTML File

Environment

U-M Google Sites

Issue

How can I download or export a Google Site I own as HTML files for use on a different web hosting platform?

Resolution

Google Sites are stored in the owner's Google Drive. However, they cannot be downloaded directly from Drive. Google Takeout can be used to export a Site as a downloadable file.

  1. Create a folder in Google Drive to store the Google Site(s).
  2. Move the Google Site(s) into the newly created folder.
  3. Go to Google Takeout.
  4. Click Deselect all in the top right corner of the Products section.
  5. Scroll down the page and find Drive. Check the box beside Drive.
  6. Click All Drive data included. The tool will display all folders in your My Drive.
  7. Uncheck the Include all files and folders in Drive box.
  8. Click Deselect all above the list of folders.
  9. Check the box beside the folder you created in step 1 and click OK.
  10. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Next step.
  11. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the "Next step" button.
  12. Click Create export.
    • Note: Leave the default destination, frequency, and file type/size settings as is.

Once the Google Site data is available for download, you will receive a "Your Google data is ready to download" email from Google with a link to download the files.
