What tools are approved for saving and sharing passwords with team members?

Research teams, especially data analysts and programmers, may need to share passwords for database accounts, service accounts, etc. This should be done in a secure manner. What tools are available to do this?

If your research team is supported by ITS, the preferred tool is Passwordstate:

Passwordstate information  |  Request Passwordstate from ITS

If your research team is supported by HITS, or you are a Michigan Medicine unit, the preferred tool is CyberArk:

Request a CyberArk Safe

(Access is managed via Michigan Medicine Groups, not through MCommunity)

If your research team is primarily supported by another U-M IT Unit (e.g. LSA IT, Facilities IT, etc.), check with your IT unit first. If they do not have tools available, use the ITS preferred tool.

Other password management tools that are not cloud-based (e.g. KeePass) are not discouraged by IA, but it is best to go with the institution's recommended and fully supported tools, which have already been vetted for security.
