How to Create an Opportunity

Summary

A step-by-step guide to adding new opportunities

Body

Follow these steps to add an opportunity to your program:

Note: Be sure to add at least one opportunity category to the system before getting started. Follow this guide for instructions: How to Create an Opportunity Category.

Step 1: Navigate to Opportunities

In the admin interface for your program, navigate to the Opportunities page.

Step 2: Add Opportunity

Click the "Add Opportunity" button near the top of the page. Enter the name of the opportunity and select a category.

Step 3: Enter remaining details

Add more information about the opportunity, such as:

  • Status (required)
    • Archived hides the opportunity from students and staff. However, you can still bring it back into view later.
    • Draft keeps the opportunity visible to admin by default but hidden from students.
    • Needs Review notifies program admins that an opportunity is ready to be published (these will come from program staff, who cannot publish opportunities on their own).
    • Published makes the opportunity visible to students. Only program admins can publish.
  • Description - a short to medium length description of the opportunity itself (required)
  • Competencies - 1 to 3 of the most relevant competencies that students will practice (required)
  • Featured - adds visual emphasis to the opportunity in the student interface by making the card twice as large. Only program admins can see this field
  • Category - the opportunity category (required)
  • Effort Level / Intensity - the intensity level (if you don't see any options, open a new tab and follow this article on How to Create Intensity Levels)
  • Duration - an estimate of how long the opportunity will last
  • Location - a physical address for the opportunity
  • Prerequisites - any requirements students should complete before participating

Step 4: Scheduling (optional)

Opportunities are not required to have specific dates associated with them. For example, you might be entering an online course that can be completed at any time. For that type of opportunity, no scheduling is required. But if, for instance, you're adding a workshop that is held at a specific date and time, switch to the "Scheduling" tab.

Step 5: Add scheduling option (optional)

Click the "Add a schedule option" and enter the appropriate date range information.

Step 6: Publish when you're ready

Once you're satisfied with the opportunity, change its status to Published. It will become visible for students to plan, complete, and reflect on.
