Sometimes you may want to create one or more Group assignments in a course to encourage collaboration and teamwork among students. In GradeCraft, when you create assignments, you may set them as individual assignments or group assignments.
Setting up group assignments
- Click "Assignments" under "Coursework" from the left-hand menu. Expand the "Coursework" folder if needed
- Create an assignment or select an existing assignment that you wish to allow resubmission
- If you wish to edit an existing one, click "Edit" in the upper right corner
- Go to the "Description & Purpose" tab
- Select “Group” for the question “Individual or Group?” and fill in the minimum and maximum group sizes.
- When you finish editing the assignment, click “Update Assignment” at the bottom of the page.
Now, when you are on the assignment dashboard, you will see a little blue iconnext to the assignments that you choose to be group assignments
Instructors create groups
If you wish to do so yourself, you can personally add and manage groups in two places.
From the "Assignment" page:
- Follow the steps in the previous section to reach the assignment details page
- Click on "Options" in the top right corner
- Click "Create Group" from the dropdown
- Here, enter the group name, choose the assignments for the group, and add group members. Note that groups do not have to be consistent across assignments (students can belong to different groups for different assignments in the same course).
- Mark the group as "approved" at the top of the page.
- There is an option to add a proposal about what you recommend students complete in the group
- After finishing, click “Create Group” at the bottom of the page.
on the "Groups" page:
- Click “Groups” under "Users" from the left hand side menu. Expand the "User" folder if needed
- Hit "+Add a New Group" from the top-right corner
- Here, enter the group name, choose the assignments for the group, and add group members. Note that groups do not have to be consistent across assignments (students can belong to different groups for different assignments in the same course).
- Mark the group as "approved" at the top of the page.
- There is an option to add a proposal about what you recommend students complete in the group
- After finishing, click “Create Group” at the bottom of the page.
Once the group is created, students can see their own groups on the assignments description page.
Students create groups
If you wish to let students form their own groups, you do not need to create groups ahead of time. Students can form their own groups and submit them for your approval. To manage "pending" groups:
- Navigate to the group assignment's detail page
- Click on the "grades" tab, then click "Review Group"
- This will take you to a form where you can approve or reject the group.
You may also do so in the "Group" tab from the left hand navigation.
Once the group is approved, students cannot propose another group for that assignment; nor can you place those students in another group for that assignment. However, if you reject the group, they can propose a new/different group or you can create a group for them.
