Introduction to Opportunities

What are opportunities?

Opportunities are meaningful experiences that allow students to practice one or more competencies. They can be curricular or co-curricular, date-specific or self-scheduled, individual or group-based, in-person or online, etc. Program admins and staff can use categories and intensity levels to group/tag opportunities in ways that help students find things more easily.

Note: We recommend adding opportunity categories and intensity levels to the system before starting to add opportunities. This is not required, but it helps to already have at least a base collection of options available for opportunity authors.

What are opportunity categories?

Opportunity categories are a customizable grouping mechanism for opportunities. They allow students to search and filter more quickly, in order to find opportunities that align with their interests or needs. Each opportunity can only belong to one category. Examples include:

  • Competition
  • Course
  • Event
  • Performance
  • Program
  • Project
  • Research
  • Student Teams/Org
  • Study Abroad
  • Teaching
  • Work
  • Workshop

What are intensity levels?

Intensity levels are another customizable grouping mechanism for opportunities. They signal to students how difficult an opportunity is expected to be. While they can use any naming convention, we recommend using the same names as the levels being used in the program. So if your program has three levels (Explore, Engage, and Explain), then those would be the intensity levels as well.

Additional Opportunity Settings

The Settings tab of the Opportunities admin page contains additional sections for viewing student reflections and reflection prompts. These areas of the application are still under development and should be ignored for now.
