During the reflection process, students report specific levels of engagement with the competencies tagged as relevant to the opportunity. For example, if an opportunity was tagged with Leadership and that competency had dimensions of Team Leadership, Societal Leadership, and Organizational Leadership, then the learner would rate how much they engaged with each of those dimensions. Under the hood, these levels have fixed corresponding points values. The values are as follows:
- None - 0 points
- Some - 50 points
- A Lot - 100 points
The engagement levels are always the same for all opportunities and all programs.
As students complete more and more reflections and continue to report their engagement, they accrue engagement points. Spire uses these points, in conjunction with the points threshold values of a program's levels, to determine when to encourage a student to level-up in a competency or dimension. Students can still level-up at any time, but this metric helps students know when the most appropriate time might be.
Programs have the ability to define these thresholds for themselves, making it easier or harder for students to be recommended for the level-up process.
Suggested Engagement Point Thresholds
We recommend the following point threshold scheme to use across levels in your program (assuming your program has 3 levels). The general idea is that it gets progressively harder/requires more engagement for students to be recommended to advance to higher levels.
- Level I - 100 points ("A Lot" of engagement from 1 opportunity)
- Level II - 300 points ("A Lot" of engagement from 2 additional opportunities, or "Some" engagement from 4 additional opportunities)
- Level III - 600 points ("A Lot" of engagement from 3 additional opportunities, or "Some" engagement from 6 additional opportunities)
