If, after my visa is issued, I will be unable to attend the U-M for the term into which I have been admitted, may I update my I-20 or DS-2019?
If you are unable to attend U-M for the term into which you were admitted, you can update your application for the next available term. For more information about how to update your application, please refer to our Updating Term and/or School or College knowledge base answer.
If you are granted admission into the new term, you will need to be issued a new form I-20/DS-2019. You will need a valid, unexpired visa in order to enter the U.S.
If COVID-19 impacts issuance of visas or entry into the U.S., we will work with students to determine if updating to a later term is appropriate. We are aware of impacted countries, but you can also let the Office of Undergraduate Admissions know if you have more timely information.
