Students Who Cannot Attend a Scheduled Final Examination

What should students do if they cannot attend a scheduled final examination?

A student who cannot attend a scheduled final examination should contact the instructor and arrange for an alternate exam date/time as soon as the student is aware of the conflict. If the instructor is not available, contact the student services staff in that school or department.

Faculty should provide alternative examination dates for students with sufficient need, without penalty, unless it can be demonstrated that a make-up opportunity would interfere unreasonably with the delivery of the course. "Sufficient need" includes:

  • Religious observance
  • Illness
  • Family emergency
  • Conflicting final exam

Students who have final examinations that conflict with religious observances should consult the Office of the Provost's Information for Students Regarding Religious Holidays and Academic Conflicts.

Students who have more than three final examinations on the same day may request exam relief by contacting the Office of the University Registrar at least two weeks prior to the start of the examination period. The University Registrar will arrange an alternate date for one of the student’s exams.
