Respondus LockDown Browser on iPad

Body

Overview

The iPad Edition of LockDown Browser enables a student to use an iPad to take exams that require LockDown Browser. For exams using only LockDown Browser (not Respondus Monitor), the iPad setting is automatically enabled.

Instructor Setting Required: For exams that also require the use of a webcam (Respondus Monitor), the instructor must enable an optional iPad setting. If they do not, you will need to use a Windows or Mac computer.

Installation

  1. Download and install the "LockDown Browser" app from the Apple App Store to your iPad. (Requires iPadOS 12 or higher).

Taking an Exam

The steps to start your exam depend on which testing tool your instructor is using.

Canvas Classic Quizzes

  1. Launch the LockDown Browser app directly.
  2. The first time the app is used, you will be prompted to select your institution. Search for and select University of Michigan - Flint. (If you later need to change the institution, select the settings icon on the toolbar).

  3. Once setup is complete, you will be directed to the Canvas login page. Log in, navigate to your course and quiz, and begin your exam.

Canvas New Quizzes

  1. Open a standard mobile browser (like Safari or Chrome) on your iPad.
  2. Log into Canvas and navigate to your quiz.
  3. Start the quiz. The LockDown Browser app will automatically launch.

Starting and Submitting

  1. When the LockDown Browser app opens, you should see a prompt. You must click Yes to confirm "app self-lock". You will then see a message confirming that your iPad is now locked to the browser.
  2. After you submit the exam, you'll see a confirmation that your iPad is no longer locked.
  3. You can now either take another exam, or exit the LockDown Browser app.

Important Notes & Troubleshooting

  • Canvas Student App: LockDown Browser for iPad is not compatible with the Canvas "Student" iPad app. You must use a browser like Safari or Chrome to launch New Quizzes.
  • Guided Access Error: It's important that you don't start Apple's Guided Access feature (by triple clicking the home button) before entering LockDown Browser. If you do, you'll see a warning message. You should immediately triple-click the home button and exit Guided Access before proceeding with your exam. You can permanently disable Guided Access on your iPad by going to Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access.
  • Tablet Not Enabled Error: If you do not see the confirmation message to open the app, but instead see a message saying your instructor has not enabled the use of a tablet for your exam, you will need to take the exam on a Windows or Mac computer.
