About the Library Access Extension & Bookmark

Environment

M-Library, Remote/Library Access

Issue

When visiting a U-M website, the URL may automatically update and append ".proxy.lib.umich.edu". This behavior may prevent login to some U-M websites or may cause repeated re-direction and make a webpage inaccessible.

  • As an example, https://mcommunity.umich.edu/ becomes https://mcommunity-umich-edu.proxy.lib.umich.edu/

Resolution

If the URL is changing automatically, the Lean Library browser extension is likely installed, enabled and set up to "Automate my authentication and skip associated pop-ups." To stop the automatic behavior, you can either: disable the automatic setting, disable the extension, or uninstall the extension and switch to the browser bookmark.

Disable Automatic Setting

  1. Go to the Extensions page for your browser
  2. Select the 3 dots and click Options
  3. Un-check Automate my authentication and skip associated pop-ups
  4. Click Save

URLs should no longer automatically change, instead a "Get access to this site" pop-up should appear (screenshot attached in Attachments) on pages where the extension detects a resource, ebook, or article online that the library has a subscription for.

Disable or Uninstall the Extension

  • Go to the Extensions page for your browser
    • Disable the Lean Library extension by toggling the slider
    • Uninstall the Lean Library extension by clicking the option to Remove (you may need to click the 3 dots to view this option)

Set Up Bookmark

If you would prefer to manually check for Library access, you can set up the bookmark per the instructions on the Library's Using a Browser Bookmark page.
