How do I install an MPrint printer, and install and use the Follow Me Queue?

Resolution

MPrint uses a local application on your computer to help you find and install MPrint printers or the virtual Follow Me print queue. These instructions walk you through obtaining and using the MPrint Printer Installer application to set up a networked printer or the Follow Me virtual printer queue.

Before you begin, you'll need to be plugged in via Ethernet on campus, connected to MWireless, or using the UMVPN from any other network to both install printers and also to print.

Note: If you have a computer/device that is managed by Michigan Medicine (CoreImage) or another unit, please contact your unit/department IT.

Campus Computing Sites printers are not available for installation. Please use a Campus Computing Sites computer, mprint.umich.edu, or Follow Me to print to these devices.


Using a university-owned computer?

  • Some university-owned computers come with the MPrint Printer Installer app pre-installed. To check, click the MiWorkspace Helper app (Block M) located in your system tray/menu bar and look for the MPrint Printer Installer.
  • If you already have the MPrint Printer Installer on your computer, skip to the Install MPrint Printers section. Otherwise, complete the steps to download the MPrint Printer Installer first.

Download the MPrint Installer

  1. Go to mprint.umich.edu/install, and if prompted, log in using your uniqname and UMICH (Level-1) password.
  2. Download the MPrint Installer application by clicking on the link in the informational box (third box from the top) that reads: “Do you have the MPrint Install application? If not, please click here to download and install the application!”
  3. Launch the downloaded installer to install the application.
  4. Once installed, open the application by double-clicking on the app or searching for MPrint Installer.
  5. If an “Open File - Security Warning” box pops up, click Run.
  6. On first launch, you will be asked to log in to MPrint to ensure you see all print queues that are available for you to install. Follow the prompts, then click Return to Application after you have completed the log in/registration process.

 

Install MPrint Printers

  1. If it’s on your computer, click the MiWorkspace Helper App (Block M) in the system tray/menu bar and open the MPrint Printer Installer. Otherwise, locate and open the MPrint Printer Installer application on your computer’s desktop or in the applications folder. 
  2. You can choose to locate available printers either by using the Quick Search or by locating printers on the MPrint Maps:
    1. Quick Search: Use the Quick Search box in the top-right of the screen to filter your queue list. Select the printer(s) you wish to install, then click Install Queues. A pop-up message will tell you when the installation is completed. The successfully installed printer(s) should be immediately available for you to use.
    2. MPrint Maps: Click the Find Printers on MPrint Maps link below the Quick Search box and select a building from the list.  A floor plan of the selected building displays available printers to you. You can change the desired floor from the View Floor drop-down list. Select the desired printer, and then click Install Printer. A pop-up message will tell you when the installation is completed. The printer should be immediately available for you to use.

 

Follow Me Printing

If you print to Follow Me, you print to a virtual print queue that holds your documents for up to 24 hours, letting you choose where and when to print your documents. Follow Me printing minimizes frustration from accidentally printing to the wrong printer, printing to a device that is jammed or out of toner, or having someone accidentally grab your document before you get to the printer.

 

Install Follow Me

You can install and use the Follow Me printer just like any other print queue. Follow the steps in the Install MPrint Printer section and search for the “Follow Me” queue.

Note: If you are a Mac user, and have installed the MPrint Install application before installing printers, you should already have Follow Me available to use on your device.

 

Use Follow Me

  1. When you are ready to print, use your browser or application’s print function and select the Follow Me printer.
  2. Click Print.
  3. When prompted again, click Print.
  4. If you receive a pop-up notification telling you that your print job is available for release, click OK.
  5. Go to any networked printer equipped with a card reader and swipe your Mcard, enter your uniqname and UMICH password on the printer touch screen, or use the MPrint Mobile app.

Important! Please make sure you log out of the printer when you're done.
