U-M ITS Slack Accounts

Environment

University of Michigan Slack Environment

Issue

Understanding how to create Slack workspaces within the U-M environment and the implications of creating paid Slack instances outside of this environment.

Resolution

Slack workspace within the U-M environment

  1. Ensure you are an active faculty, staff, student, or Type-1 sponsored affiliate at the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, Flint campuses, or Michigan Medicine.
  2. Use your U-M provided Slack account to create workspaces at no additional cost.

Follow Slack: Create a Workspace.

External (non-U-M) Slack workspaces

  • Be aware that you will be responsible for all aspects of the environment, including billing.
  • Personal Slack accounts should not be used for sensitive U-M data as they are not covered under the U-M agreement.

Transition from paid personal Slack workspace to free U-M workspace

  1. Create a new workspace within the U-M Slack environment; invite any users you want to have access.
  2. Discontinue your paid personal Slack instance to avoid further charges.

Note that no content will move from an external (non-U-M) workspace.  You will need to start fresh in the U-M environment.
