U-M faculty, staff, and students can add an extra layer of security to their email messages using Virtru with U-M Gmail. Virtru includes a number of security features, with options to encrypt your email, and help you control access to the messages you send. It allows you to send end-to-end encrypted email, and lets you choose when to turn on encryption for each message, which is especially important when sending sensitive data (see the U-M Sensitive Data Guide). Additional options include the ability to:
- See whether the recipient has opened the message
- Prevent a forwarded email from being read
- Set an expiry date beyond which the email cannot be read, and
- Revoke the ability to read an email after it has been sent
For best results, it is recommended to use the Chrome browser extension with U-M Gmail, but other options are also available.
