Can I Use Images to Display Text or Page Layouts in WordPress?

Summary

Learn why text and page layouts should be created with WordPress blocks rather than embedded in images.

Body

When creating content in WordPress, avoid using images that contain large amounts of text or entire page layouts. Instead, use the built-in WordPress blocks to create your content.

Why does this matter?

Using an image in place of actual text and page elements can cause several problems:

  • Accessibility: Text embedded in images may be inaccessible to visitors using screen readers or other assistive technologies.

  • Mobile responsiveness: Flattened layouts cannot rearrange themselves to fit smaller screens, often making text difficult to read on mobile devices.

  • Maintenance: Updating text requires editing and replacing the entire image rather than making a quick change in WordPress.

What should I do instead?

Use the WordPress block editor to create your layout with Heading, Paragraph, Columns, Group, and Image blocks. These tools allow you to create visually engaging pages that adapt to different screen sizes while supporting accessibility.

Images are still encouraged for photographs, illustrations, and decorative elements. However, important text and information should be added directly to the page using WordPress blocks, not embedded within an image.

All university websites must comply with U-M's accessibility requirements. Site owners and editors are responsible for ensuring their published content meets these standards.
