Issue
Overview of the BarTender MDining application, and how to install and troubleshoot it.
Resolution
Context
The BarTender MDining application and its printers are used by MDining to print out labels for pre-packaged foods like sandwiches and salads. This document details the steps involved in the setup of the application and its associated USB-connected printer(s). This process will require local admin permissions, so Neighborhood IT (NIT) will need to assist if a user does not have this.
Note: There are four (4) of these printers in active use. They are all located in the South Quad MDining admin offices (room 0604).
Some important things to note before continuing:
-
Student Life Technology Solutions (SLTS) is responsible for validating that the licensing server is up and stable.
-
MDining Applications is responsible for maintaining employee access to BarTender and purchasing the associated printers.
-
ITS MiWorkspace Neighborhood IT (NIT) is responsible for installing and troubleshooting the BarTender program and its associated label printers. For ease of reference, this process is outlined below.
Dependencies
BarTender requires the Microsoft Access 2013 Runtime and Primera LX9-- Label Printer Driver to function. This should be done before installing the BarTender application.
Microsoft Access 2013 Runtime
BarTender will not work with newer versions of this runtime, including the Office 365 versions. You can download the Microsoft Access 2013 Runtime installer directly from Microsoft here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=39358
When downloading the file, make sure to choose the 64-bit (x64) version.
After the download has finished, run it and follow the installer’s prompts. Upon completion, you can proceed with installing the printer driver.
Primera LX9-- Label Printer Drivers
Drivers should automatically install by default when a printer is connected to the computer, but sometimes this process fails. If you need to install the printer driver, you can get it from the vendor’s website:
https://www.primera.com/lx900downloads (LX900)
https://www.primera.com/lx910downloads (LX910)
Once the installer has finished downloading, right-click on it and select Run as Administrator. Once complete, do a test print to the label printer to verify that the drivers install successfully.
Installation
- BarTender’s installation files are located at the following network path:
\\hsg-shared.m.storage.umich.edu\hsg-shared\Software\FullInstalls\CBORD Bartender\Bartender_2016_R4\
- After this has been mapped to the user’s computer, copy the installer (BT2016_R4_3127_Full_x64.exe) to C:\Temp. It will not run successfully from the network share.
- Click through the dialogue prompts until you reach Specify the edition to install, then select Automation from the options listed.
- At the next prompt, choose Install: BarTender Application Suite (Recommended) and leave all Optional Modules unselected.
- In the next window, select Next, which skips the User Account portion and uses the Local System account. It will take you to a new window where you can confirm the installation and proceed.
- Upon completion of the installation, a new window will pop up instructing you to activate the software. Click Activate Now.
- A window will pop up prompting you for a product key. Enter the following product key into the field provided: W1QJ-5LX3-F3BP-7J65.
After doing so, a warning message will be generated by the Activation Wizard saying that a license was not found. This is expected behavior and is due to BarTender being unable to communicate with the license server.
Click Continue on this screen to bypass the issue.
- Do not set up "BarTender Alert Setup" on the next screen. Just click Finish.
- You will then be taken to a "BarTender Registration" window, which should be ignored. Click Next to skip the registration.
- At this point, you should get a message saying that the installation has been completed. Click Finish to open the BarTender application.
- After BarTender has launched, it will need additional configuration to function. Please complete the following configuration steps:
- Click the Administer tab on the Menubar
- Select Licensing Setup from the drop menu
- In the Preferred section of the resulting configuration window, enter the following information:
- Server: hsg-netnutrition.housing.umich.edu
- Port: 5160 (UDP)
- Timeout: 15
- Attempts: 3
- Do not fill out the fields in the Alternate (Optional) section. Any default information it automatically sets can be left as-is.
- Click the Test button in the Preferred section to confirm your connection to the license server.
- After confirming BarTender connects to the license server, click OK to save the configuration and exit out of the Licensing Setup prompt.
- The BarTender program installation is now done.
Additional Information
Remember, these are USB printers and must be connected as such.
The MDining Systems Team and SLTS are available for additional support if any issues arise during the above process.
Print Driver Troubleshooting
If the installation fails, please follow the troubleshooting steps provided by Primera:
http://supportsystem.livehelpnow.net/article/21426/44939/
Printer Vendor Escalation
If the above troubleshooting steps fail, Primera will need to be contacted for additional assistance from one of their technology reps. Typically, the MDining Systems Team places the call to Primera. However, to better facilitate this process, please download and install PTStatus Status Monitor on the problem computer. This software gathers information the Primera rep will need for troubleshooting.
The Primera rep may ask to make permission changes to certain folders on the problem computer for diagnostic purposes. Commonly requested changes have included modifying security permissions to allow Full Control of the following:
- Local Disk ( C: ) > ProgramData > PTI
- Local Disk ( C: ) > Program Files (x86) > Primera Technology
- Control Panel > View devices and printers > Color Label 900 > left-click for options > Printer Properties > Security tab> Everyone
