Removing a Device in Jamf & Releasing/Unassigning from Apple School Manager (ASM)

Overview

When a device needs to be removed from Jamf, it must also be handled in Apple School Manager (ASM). This prevents the device from automatically re-enrolling and ensures it’s correctly categorized as either staying within UofM or leaving permanently. Any ASM changes requires coordination with the Izzy team via Slack.  It's important to know difference between Release and unassign because a release is permanent

Steps to Remove a Device from Jamf

1. Request ASM Action (Izzy Team in Slack)

Before unmanaging in Jamf, reach out to the Izzy team via Slack.

  • Device serial number(s)

  • Ask to check for and remove any activation locks.

  • Whether the device should be Unassigned (temporary) or Released (permanent)

  • The reason/context

Example Slack Message (Unassign):

Hi Izzy team,
Please remove any activation locks and unassign the following device from ASM so I can unmanage it in Jamf: - Serial: XXXXXXXXXX This device is moving to another UofM department.

Example Slack Message (Release):

Hi Izzy team,
Please remove any activation locks and release the following device from ASM: - Serial: XXXXXXXXXX This device is leaving UofM and will not be managed anymore.

2. Remove Device in Jamf

  • Log into the Jamf Pro console with your umich.edu account.
  • Select Computers (For Macs) or Devices (For iPhones and iPads)
  • Click Search Inventory
  • Search for the device by serial number.  You can also leave the search black and hit Enter to display all the devices or computers.
  • Select the Computer or Device record.
  • Click the Manage tab at the top of the screen.
  • Click Unmanage Device - This removes it from MDM supervision. The device record will remain in Jamf for reference
  • Restart the device and make sure it has connection to the Internet and the command will be pushed to the device.  This will remove the MDM.
