Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor
LockDown Browser (RLDB) is a custom browser that prevents you from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during a test. The RLDB must be downloaded to your computer or laptop before you can take a test. The LockDown Browser and Monitor requires a webcam and you will be recorded during an online, non-proctored test.
Using Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor
Taking an Exam with Respondus Monitor and LockDown Browser can give you an overview of how Respondus Works.
Prior to taking a test, you need to install Respondus LockDown Browser (RLDB) onto your laptop or desktop (choosing the “UM Canvas Prod” option).
Once downloaded, an RLDB icon shortcut is placed on the computer screen. Upon opening the RLDB, you will be instructed to close all open applications on your computer, but you can open Canvas. You may be required to use RLDB with your webcam. If so, you will need a working webcam and microphone to take the test.
Before the test begins, you will be led through the startup sequence. This will include a webcam check, you may be advised of permitted resources, you may take a student photo and student ID photo, and a facial detection check. The startup sequence is set up by the instructor. The exam begins immediately following the startup sequence. The recording will automatically end when the test is submitted.
Prior to taking a test, your instructor will have a practice test to ensure that the RLDB is installed and working on your laptop or desktop.
Follow these guidelines when preparing for an exam using Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor:
- Select a quiet location where you won't be disturbed or interrupted (no talking with others, headphones, or other communication devices are allowed while using Respondus).
- Complete your practice quiz prior to your exam to ensure your hardware and Internet connection are functional.
- Turn off all mobile devices and remove them from the test-taking area.
- Clear your area of all non-essential materials including books, papers, other computers, or devices.
- Remain at your desk or workstation for the duration of the test.
- Make sure your face is well-lit and visible on your webcam. The Respondus video recorder uses facial detection to track and flag activity which instructors will review for misconduct.
Note: Make sure you are taking your tests on a desktop or laptop computer. (You cannot take your exams on an iPad or mobile device.)
