Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor Overview and Use Cases for Faculty
LockDown Browser (RLDB) is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment in Canvas. When students use LockDown Browser to access a quiz, they are unable to print, copy, visit other websites, access other applications, or close a quiz until it is submitted for grading. The RLDB must be downloaded to the student’s computer or laptop before they can access and take a quiz.
Respondus Monitor allows a webcam to be used with the LockDown Browser and records students during online, non-proctored quizzes. When this feature is enabled for a quiz, students are required to use a webcam and microphone with LockDown Browser. After the quiz is complete, an instructor can review details of the assessment, and even view the recorded videos.
Instructor Orientation/Training
Prior to using Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor for the first time, faculty must submit a request to use Respondus. Even if your students have used the tool before, if you have not, an orientation is needed.
It is highly encouraged that you submit your request to use Respondus at least two weeks before the term is set to start to ensure that all configuration needs, questions, and testing can be completed before students are expected to use this tool.
