What Is The Purpose Of This How-To-Guide?
The purpose of this guide is to provide directions on how to update your computer to Windows 11. Please note that this operating system update process is only supported for managed UMSN and U-M computers.
Please remember that this needs to be completed by: October 14th, 2025
IMPORTANT: Please Do the Following Before You Start:
✔) Save your work.
✔) Plug your computer into a power source
✔)Connect to a reliable network. It can be wired or wireless. It is not advised to use a public WiFi network such as an airport or a cafe.
✔)Set aside at least 2-3 hours for the installation to run. You won’t be able to use your computer until the upgrade is finished
Guide For Upgrading From Windows 10 to Windows 1
Step 1 - Refresh Software Center
- If applicable, click Show Hidden Icons in the system tray located in the task bar.
- Click the block M in the system tray.
- Click Troubleshooting and then Refresh Software Center.
- Wait 10 minutes.


Step 2: Run Windows 11 Update Application
- Once you are ready to begin, click the block M in the system tray.
- In the box that pops up, click on Software Center.
- Click Applications and select the available Windows 11 Upgrade.
- Note: You can type “Windows” in the search bar at the top right to narrow your choices if you are having a hard time finding the upgrade.
- Click Install.
- Click the green check mark button when you are ready to begin the upgrade.
- The process will verify that your power cord is connected and that your computer has enough space to continue. Once all checks are completed, click the green check mark button to continue. (If you get an error saying you are unable to upgrade, please contact UMSN IT).
- Note: During the upgrade, a temporary notice screen will replace your normal background. Your computer will restart multiple times during the upgrade.
- Log on to your computer when the normal login screen reappears.

Why do I need to upgrade to Windows 11?
U-M requires Windows 11 upgrades because Windows 10 reaches its end-of-life on October 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide essential security updates or technical support, leaving computers vulnerable and out of compliance with U-M's security policies.
How long will the upgrade take?
The upgrade takes at least 2 hours to complete.
If I do not do the upgrade, will my computer still function?
To ensure continued security and optimal performance, Microsoft mandates major Windows operating system updates every 12-18 months. These updates provide essential security patches and bug fixes. Computers not upgraded by October 14th, 2025 will be at risk for security vulnerabilities and may lose network access in the future.
I just received a brand new computer, do I still need to install Windows 11?
No, Windows 11 comes pre-installed on new computers
Do I need admin or special IT permission to run the upgrade software?
No, you do not need admin access or special permissions to install software via the Software Center or when installing the Windows upgrade.
Do I need to back up my data before the upgrade?
You should save any work before starting the upgrade. You do not need to back up your data.
Do I need to be on campus to perform the upgrade?
No, you do not need to be on campus to perform the upgrade.
Will upgrading to Windows 11 change any of my settings?
We’ve tested the upgrade on UMSN computers, and your data and settings will remain intact. However, since the upgrade requires a restart, you’ll need to log back into certain applications such as Outlook, Chrome, and Teams. If you notice anything that needs adjustment after the upgrade, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
