Computing Equipment for Faculty and Staff (non grant-funded)*
In general, standard computing equipment is supplied for faculty and staff by the UMSN technology group. The standard computing package for faculty is a Windows laptop package, and the standard package for staff is a Windows desktop package. Faculty may select an alternate or enhanced system (Mac, Linux-based, additional features) after discussion with the UMSN technology group. Any additional cost associated with an alternate system will be funded by the faculty’s discretionary (start-up, research incentive) or personal funds.
Information on equipment configurations and cost can be found here: UMSN Standard Computing Packages or http://myumi.ch/aXYNb. Some caveats exist for specific employee titles, e.g., temporary employees, part-time employees, and others (see below). The UMSN replacement cycle for computer equipment is four years. Note: Upgraded replacement packages will still require faculty discretionary or personal funds.
Computing Equipment for Faculty and Staff (grant-funded)**
A standard Windows desktop system (research staff), standard Windows laptop (research faculty) or alternate system specified by the PI, will be installed for grant-funded faculty and staff. This equipment is funded from the grant, if permissible, or from the PI’s discretionary funds. Information on equipment configurations and cost can be found here: UMSN Standard Computing Packages or http://myumi.ch/aXYNb.
The UMSN replacement cycle for computer equipment is four years. For computer equipment used by research faculty and staff, there is an option to purchase a five-year warranty and extend the replacement cycle to five years. See the UMSN Computer Equipment Replacement Policy for more detail. Please note that if computer equipment needs to be replaced within the life of a grant, grant funds (if permissible) or faculty discretionary funds are still required for this replacement.
