Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor Instructor Guide

Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor Overview and Use Cases for Faculty
LockDown Browser (RLDB) is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment in Canvas. When students use LockDown Browser to access a quiz, they are unable to print, copy, visit other websites, access other applications, or close a quiz until it is submitted for grading. The RLDB must be downloaded to the student’s computer or laptop before they can access and take a quiz.

Respondus Monitor allows a webcam to be used with the LockDown Browser and records students during online, non-proctored quizzes. When this feature is enabled for a quiz, students are required to use a webcam and microphone with LockDown Browser. After the quiz is complete, an instructor can review details of the assessment, and even view the recorded videos.

It is highly encouraged that you submit your Respondus course activation request at least two weeks before your course term to ensure you have enough time to complete your orientation and configure Respondus.

Instructor Responsibilities

  • Complete Respondus Orientation - Prior to using Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor for the first time, faculty must complete a Respondus orientation with an instructional designer by scheduling a Quick Consultation.
  • Submit Respondus Course Activation Request - After completing the Respondus orientation, faculty must submit a Respondus course activation request to enable Respondus for their course.

Getting Help

Help During an Exam

Instructors and students may experience technology issues during an exam that prevent students from accessing or completing their exams successfully. If this occurs, instructors are responsible for immediately executing their contingency plan so that students can complete the quiz or exam. No troubleshooting is performed during and exam due to time constraints of exams, and the amount of time required to properly diagnose and troubleshoot technical issues.

Help After An Exam

Instructors should direct students who experience technical issues with Respondus during an exam, to contact UMSN-IT after the exam to troubleshoot and resolve those issues. Students can schedule a consultation with UMSN-IT here: UMSN-IT Consultation, or contact UMSN-IT (see contact information below).
