Adjusting media playback volume from the podium computer

This article describes a potentially confusing media playback volume control issue, specific to podium computers in hybrid classrooms, with illustrated instructions for adjusting and muting audio volume when running video files that have been downloaded to the desktop.

Why can't I control sound levels with the podium's touch panel?

• Although in most classrooms the podium is equipped with a touch panel for switching projection sources (podium computer, laptop computer, document camera, Blu-ray player and Cynap wireless), podium computer playback volume in the hybrid classroom can only be controlled with the computer mouse or keyboard.

• This separation of audio channels was engineered to prevent microphone levels from being disrupted during Zoom calls. It may affect playback of YouTube videos, media embedded in PowerPoint, downloaded mp4 videos and mp3s.

• Any faculty, student, GSI or staff member intending to play media on this equipment needs to know that the standard podium's Crestron touch panel volume control will not work as expected while running media from the podium computer in hybrid classrooms.

• Even if Document Camera is selected on the touch panel, un-muted media playback will impose upon the event in progress.

How to adjust media playback volume in the hybrid classroom using VLC 

• Click the speaker icon, near the lower right corner of the computer screen.

• Listen for a tone when you stop moving the slider. Adjust volume to around 50%.

• When a video file is opened, its volume may be adjusted using the app's triangular volume control.

• To mute sound, tap speaker icon to the left of the triangular volume indicator. Red 'X' indicates audio mute.

• Note that the video clip is likely to begin playing as soon as it is opened.

• When playing multiple clips or files in succession, interspersed with lecture and discussion, mute volume after each clip is finished.

• This enables you to silently "cue up" the next clip or audio file.

• Otherwise, regardless of what is being displayed, the audio track will intrude and potentially disrupt the shared attention span of the class.

Remember that you'll need to un-mute before playing the clip.
