Set up a Research Museum Collections Data Volume in Turbo

Summary

This article explains how to set up Research Museum collections data volumes on Turbo storage for secure, organized access to collection-related research data.

Body

To set up a research museum collection data volume, the collection manager must meet the enrollment requirements for the University of Michigan Research Computing Package (UMRCP).

  • Enrollment Requirements

  • If the collection manager already has a Turbo volume under their uniqname, this volume will be converted to a Research Museum Collection volume to store both their research collections data and personal research data.

  • The new collections volume will be labelled using the naming convention below.

    • The new collections volume label will be an alias for the UMRCP personal research data volume name.

If the collections manager does not meet all requirements, an exception may be granted by contacting ARC: arc-support@umich.edu

Volume Naming Convention:

  • The abbreviation, COL, will signify that the volume contains research collections data
  • Research Museum abbreviation

The volume name will be labelled as follows:

lsa-col-<Research Museum abbreviation>
    For example: lsa-col-ummz-

List of Museum Abbreviations:

  • UMMAA - Museum of Anthropological Archaeology
  • UMMP - Museum of Paleontology
    • Invert - Invertebrate
    • Paleo - Paleobotany
    • Vert - Vertebrate
  • UMMZ - Museum of Zoology
    • Herp - Herpetology
    • EEB - Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
    • Mammals
    • Mollusks
    • Insects
    • Fishes
    • Birds
  • MPABI/Biorepository
  • Herbarium
    • EEB - Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
    • Vascular Plants
    • Vascular Plants/MI Flora/Algae
    • Fungi, Bryophytes, and Lichens
  • Kelsey Museum of Archaeology
  • UM Museum of National History
  • UM History of Art
  • Each data volume must have a new MCommunity group created, with all users added.

    • MCommunity Group label: lsa-col-<Research Museum abbreviation>-turbo
  • Each MCommunity group under the COL designator must include LSA-TS team members as admins to monitor access or renewal notifications.

    • Collection Managers and LSA-TS team members should be listed as owners and members of the group.

Offboarding:

To maintain the continuity of ownership for research collections data volumes during offboarding:

  • Collection manager leaving the University: the collections data must transfer to the new collection manager’s uniqname.

    • LSA-TS’ shortcode will be used to cover the expenses for the period of time in between the 2 collection managers.
    • MCommunity and access groups must be updated.
  • Collection manager leaving position but not University: all collection research data will be transferred to the new collection manager’s uniqname.

    • LSA-TS’ shortcode will be used to cover the expenses for the period of time in between the 2 collection managers.
    • Access permissions must be adjusted to reflect the change.
