Summary

Grammarly is an AI-powered application that acts as a writing assistant, which checks spelling, grammar, and punctuation. It is used by over 50,000 organizations, including numerous colleges and universities. It is available to staff and faculty working for the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. The current license agreement bills departments via shortcode is currently $24 per year, per person, with renewals occurring yearly on May 1st. This fee is "as-is" and cannot be modified pro rata. This rate may be adjusted by the vendor and will be communicated as soon as we know.

Environment

Grammarly is a web-based application that can be accessed in your internet browser via Grammarly.com. However, there is also a desktop application that can assist you with other applications, such as Microsoft Office, Slack, or the Google suite of applications.

Directions 

If you or others in your department are interested in using Grammarly Enterprise at a discounted rate, or have other questions regarding this software as it relates to the LSA IT environment, write to LSATechnologyServices@umich.edu. Once approved, your users will receive email invitations to their UMich accounts, allowing them to start using the application.

Important Usage Guidelines

Grammarly is a cloud-based service. Even though our license is protected, you must not use it with highly sensitive or regulated data, such as:

  • Social Security Numbers (SSNs) or personal identification details
  • Protected health or medical data (PHI)
  • Export-controlled or confidential research data

If you are unsure whether your data is considered sensitive, please review the University's content on sensitive data.
