Implementing a standardized approach for naming groups we use in Active Directory will make it easy to identify a group’s purpose, access level, and associated department or project at a glance. In this article you will find best practices for creating consistent naming conventions for groups that grant access to shared drives.

Types of groups and recommended naming conventions:

  • MCommunity groups are used to send emails, share U-M Google resources, authorize access to resources, and more.
    Recommended Naming Convention: Mcomm-lsa-(add group name)
  • Folder Groups are groups used to grant access to a particular folder in a drive. A group may also have special permissions on the type of access the group grants.
    Recommended Naming Convention: lsa-dept-f-(add folder name)
