Directions

Licensing Information

  • LSA Physics has 1 COMSOL licenses with 2 available seats.
  • The license server is managed and hosted by ITS Software Services.
  • Individuals within Physics who plan to use the license should be added to the lsa-comsol-users MCommunity group.
  • The license is perpetual and currently only the maintenance is renewed yearly. If the maintenance was no longer paid for, the department could continue to use the software in it's current state, it would just not update and have no vendor support.

Purchasing & Renewal Information

This renewal is started in mid August every year. The maintenance renewal fee is ~$800 a year and runs from October 1st - September 30th. The Physics CA can provide a shortcode for renewal.

Installation

The installation media and license information can be acquired from Umich ITAM.

The Randall Desktop Support Team has copies of some of the older version housed at: \\phys-ocs\LSAIT-Randall-Software\Comsol
For version 5.5/5.6 you will need to mount the ISO as a DVD and then run the installer
Once you have the ISO mounted, open it and run the Setup.exe

The Setup will start and you will need to select the following:
1. Select your language as "English" and click Next
2. Click "New Comsol Installation"
3. Under License accept the license agreement and change the License Format to "License File"
4. Browse to the folder where you located the ISO and select the License.dat for the appropriate version.
5. Change the name to "Licensed User" and company to "University of Michigan" and click "Next"
6. Under Products leave all the defaults selected and click "Next"
7. Under Options Select "Install for all users" for the PowerPoint Interface and click "Next"
8. Under Install click "Install" and the installation will complete.

Notes

  • The entire Physics community has access to the shared network license. Any users outside of that department would have to purchase the software separately.
  • Physics users requesting this software should have their tickets routed to the Randall Desktop Support Team. All other requests should be routed to the regional Desktop Team for purchase of a new license.
  • Robert Deegan's license has been retired as of 7/23. He has said his group can just use the shared licenses and there is no need for him to keep his perpetual licenses (approved through emails with Laura Green).
