Windows 10 license deactivated

Issue

Window has a warning that the license needs to be reactivated

Environment

Operating System: Windows 10

Cause

Windows 10 will check in with the on-campus license server on campus every 90 days or so. If the computer hasn't checked it, the Windows will deactivate until it's been re-authorized. This is typically seen on computers that have lived off-campus for a long time or, computers on-campus that haven't had an active network connection in a long time

Resolution

Off-campus

  1. Verify that you have an active Internet connection
  2. Start up the UM VPN (Install Cisco AnyConnect - Mac / Windows)
  3. Choose, UMVPN - All Traffic from the dropdown menu
  4. Click, Connect
  5. Use your UM credentials for the Weblogin
  6. Stay Connected to the VPN for 40-60 minutes. Windows should check-in at some point and the OS will be re-licensed
  7. If you can't wait for it to re-license, you can do the following:
    1. Download the ITS_Activate_Windows tool
    2. Run the file
    3. Go through the prompts, choosing Yes and Continue
    4. It'll say it's checking with the KMS server. When finished, it'll will say that it was successful
    5. Click, Quit

On-campus

  1. Verify that you have an active Internet connection. This can either be via an Ethernet cable or on the WiFi (MWireless)
  2. Stay connected for 40-60 minutes. Windows should check-in at some point and the OS will be re-licensed
