Using the university VPN (Overview)

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) uses advanced encryption and tunneling to establish secure, private network connections over "third-party" networks. Using the U-M VPN allows the University of Michigan community to access the University network via the Internet over a secure, encrypted connection from their machines. In most cases, it lets you access restricted resources on the University's network not normally available outside the University. In other words, the VPN puts your machine securely on the Unversity's network no matter where you are in the world.

The U-M VPN is available to all University of Michigan students, faculty, and staff who have a valid U-M uniqname and Kerberos password.

ITS has setup instructions for various clients linked from their Getting Started page. However, LSA's recommendations differ in detail from the Unversity instructions. We encourage you to start with the separate articles that we have provided for these platforms:
