Open InDesign files from Adobe Creative Cloud (CC) for use in Adobe CS6

Describes how to open InDesign files saved from Creative Cloud in InDesign CS6

You may receive a document from an editor who used Creative Cloud in their environment, and you have InDesign CS6 installed on you Windows computer. Usually these documents are packaged as a zipped files, which when unzipped may contain the following:

- Document fonts folder, Links folder, .idml file, .indd file, Instructions.txt file

The LSA Advancement team often uses InDesign Creative Cloud files for example.

  1. Download the zip file and save it to your preferred folder.
  2. Right-click on the zip file and select Extract All.. from the menu.
  3. Alternatively, if you have 7 Zip installed choose 7 Zip > Extract files from the right click menu.
  4. Follow the prompts to extract the files.
  5. In the folder containing the newly extracted files, double-click the .idml files and wait for InDesign to load.

Additional notes

CS6 does not support all the features contained in Creative Cloud including some new fonts. When you open a document in a previous version of InDesign you may loose content or the layout may not match the original exactly.
