Mac: My camera isn't working

A Quick Fix for Mac Camera Not Working. If your Mac computer's camera is not working; whether it be in Skype, Photobooth, or any apps that use your built in front facing camera.

Symptoms

When using apps that require the computer's camera are not working or giving you an error that there is no camera.

Environment

Apple, Mac

Resolution

  1. Try restarting the computer. If this works, stop; otherwise continue with Step 2.
  2. Quit all open apps that may try to use the FaceTime camera.
  3. Open Terminal, found in the /Applications/Utilities directory in OS X.
  4. Enter the following command strings exactly, then press Return: sudo killall VDCAssistant
    Enter the administrator password when requested, this is required to execute a command with superuser privileges as prefixed by sudo.
  5. Still at the terminal, issue the following command: sudo killall AppleCameraAssistant
  6. Relaunch the app that was attempting to use the camera.

At this point the front camera should work again as if nothing was ever wrong with it. (this is an excerpt from here)

Additional notes

Sometimes the sudo killall AppleCameraAssistant will say that it cannot be found just continue with the steps and it should still work.
