Dropbox: Tagging (@) Someone in a Comment Does Not Show Them as an Option

Summary

This article provides information on an issue you may encounter when tagging someone in a comment on a file in Dropbox. The issue involves the person you want to share with not populating as an option when tagging them.

Body

Environment

U-M Dropbox

Issue

I'm trying to tag (@) someone using comments on a Dropbox file, but the person I tagged does not appear as someone I can select.

Resolution

Tagging in comments pulls from your contacts and the people you have previously shared with and who have shared with you. If the person does not appear as someone to select when you tag (@) them in a comment, a workaround is to invite the person directly.

  • Instead of using @uniqname, enter @uniqname@umich.edu. Click "Invite uniqname@umich.edu" when it appears beneath the field.
  • Once the invite is sent, future tagging (@) should cause the person to appear as an option to select.

Note: When tagging someone in a comment on a file, if the person is not already shared on the file, they will only have Can view access.

Additional Information

Using this workaround can take upwards of an hour before the invite is received.
