Zoom: Received "This meeting is scheduled for [date/time]" Message and Can't Join Meeting

Summary

This article provides information and troubleshooting steps for why you may receive the "This meeting is scheduled for [date/time]" message and be unable to join a Zoom meeting as intended.

Body

Environment

U-M Zoom

Issue

  • When I try to join a Zoom meeting, I see a message that says "This meeting is scheduled for [date and time]" and I cannot join.
  • The date and time may also not correspond to the date and time I think the meeting was scheduled for.
  • This may have started happening suddenly for a meeting I've been using for a while.

Resolution

This happens when all of the following are true:

  • The meeting was scheduled as a non-recurring meeting, AND
  • The time you are attempting to enter the meeting does not match the scheduled time of the meeting (e.g., you're joining the meeting at 4 p.m. on May 21, 2026, but the meeting was actually scheduled for 10 a.m. on December 1, 2025), AND
  • One of the following is true within the meeting details:
    • The meeting does not have the Allow participants to join [anytime] box checked in the Options section, OR
    • The meeting does have the Allow participants to join box checked (with the corresponding time selected: "5/10/15/anytime before start time"), but it also has the Waiting Room box checked in the Security section.

This issue occurs most frequently when people unknowingly use a non-recurring meeting as if it were recurring. The recommended resolution is for the meeting host to do the following:

  1. Go to U-M Zoom and click Sign in.
  2. Click Meetings from the left navigation.
  3. Find the meeting under the Upcoming or Previous tab.
    • It will most likely be under the Previous tab.
    • Make sure to check all the way to the end of the list, as meetings with no fixed end date often appear at the end.
  4. Hover over the meeting and click Edit.
  5. Check the Recurring meeting box in the Time Zone section.
  6. Select No end time beside End date.
  7. Click Save at the bottom.

This will make the meeting recurring and not schedule it for a specific time, so it can be launched at any time.

Additional Information

Important: When pasting a meeting link into a calendar event (whether manually or using the "Add to: Google Calendar" option in Zoom), setting that calendar event to repeat does not automatically make the linked meeting recurring. To ensure both are synced, use one of these methods:

  • For Zoom on the web, check the Recurring meeting box when creating the meeting and select No end time beside "End date."
  • Use the Google Calendar add-on or Outlook integration (pre-installed on HITS computers) to schedule directly from your calendar.
