Can't Use Zoom through Canvas - Warning Message Displays

Summary

This article provides additional information on the warning message that may display when trying to access U-M Zoom through Canvas.

Body

Environment

U-M Canvas, U-M Zoom

Issue

I am trying to set up Zoom in my U-M Canvas course, but when I click Zoom in the navigation, it shows me a warning that I need to create my account. However, I know that I have already created my U-M Zoom account.

Resolution

There are two most likely reasons for this issue:

  • Your Zoom account may not actually be part of U-M Zoom (even if it appears that it is). This means that U-M Canvas cannot find your account. To identify if this is the issue:
    1. Navigate to https://umich.zoom.us/account and log in with U-M Weblogin if prompted
    2. Check that the Account Name is University of Michigan. If so, you are a member of U-M Zoom, and this is not the problem. Continue to the second bullet below. If not, continue to step 3
    3. If your account name is not University of Michigan (even if the header says MZoom), you are not a member of U-M Zoom. The resolution is to join U-M Zoom. (Ensure that you do this in an incognito/private browser window.) Contact ITS for assistance if needed
  • The Zoom integration in Canvas looks for a Zoom account in U-M Zoom that matches your Canvas email address. If it can't find one, and you have confirmed you have an account in U-M Zoom, this means that your Canvas email address may not match your U-M Zoom email address. Your U-M Zoom email address is always your @umich.edu email. Therefore, you should change your default Canvas email address to match your @umich.edu email by following the Canvas help center instructions.
