Issue
How do I find the MAC (Media Access Control) address on my computer?
Resolution
Windows Computer
- Click the Start menu in the bottom-left corner of the screen
- Select Run or type cmd into the search bar at the bottom of the Start menu to populate the command prompt
- Type ipconfig /all (make sure to include the space between "g" and "/") and press enter
- The MAC address is a series of 12 digits, listed as the Physical Address (00:1A:C2:7B:00:47, for example)
Please note: Each network adapter (wireless, Ethernet, etc.) has a separate MAC address.
Apple (Mac) Computer
- To find the MAC address of Wi-Fi adapter:
- Select System Preferences from the Apple menu
- Click the Network icon (in the Internet & Wireless section)
- Select Wi-Fi from the list on the left and click the Advanced button on the bottom right
- Select the Hardware tab and the MAC address for the Wi-FI will appear below
- To find the MAC address of the ethernet adapter:
- Select System Preferences
- Click the Network icon (in the Internet & Wireless section)
- Select Ethernet from the list on the left and click the Advanced button on the bottom right
- Select the Hardware tab and the MAC address for the ethernet card will appear below
Additional Information
- The location of the MAC address can change over time when updates are applied
- If the above instructions do not help you find your MAC address, Google "find MAC address for <device>" and look for the manufacturer (or a reputable site) results
- WiFi Routers can have more than one MAC address - the WAN/WLAN is usually the one that needs to be registered for Residence Hall network access
