Google: "Maximum number of images reached. Can't insert additional images" Error in Slides

Summary

This article explains why the "Maximum number of images reached" error occurs in Google Slides and what users can do to resolve it.

Body

Environment

U-M Google, Drive, Slides

Issue

I am trying to add images to my Google Slides presentation, but they keep appearing greyed out, and I receive the error "Maximum number of images reached. Can't insert additional images."

Resolution

  • According to Google, this error occurs because Google Slides retains a comprehensive version history of the file so you can restore past changes.
  • If a Google Slides presentation is continually edited and rewritten over time (even without image changes), it can still hit the image limit because version history retains images from earlier versions.
  • Google recommends creating a copy of the current presentation and starting fresh so the version history is not carried over. There is no other workaround for this error.
